Were you aware that you can use pepto bismol for dogs? It’s true! Pepto Bismol is a brand name for a medication generically called Bismuth Subsalicylate. Bismuth Subsalicylate can be used to treat a wide variety of gastrointestinal ailments in dogs including upset stomachs, diarrhea and vomiting. It can even be used to help reduce flatulence (gas) in dogs. I think every pet owner can appreciate this particular benefit!
In a general sense, Bismuth Subsalicylate acts as a coating and soothing agent to help relieve the clinical signs associated with mild to moderate stomach problems in dogs. It is often used in conjunction with other medications as part of a larger, general treatment plan. When used properly and at the appropriate dosage, pepto bismol can indeed be safely used in dogs of all sizes. You may be able to provide relief to your pet by looking no farther than your own home medicine cabinet.
Please remember that this information is not a substitute for veterinary advice. It’s meant purely as a source of information and to clear up some of the misconceptions that I have come across in practice. Please ensure that you are administering a plain Bismuth Subsalicylate products and not a combination product (Often called a “plus” product”) that may also contain other active ingredients that can can be harmful to your pet. Always read the label carefully!
